Girls are sometimes facing a tough job in the snowboarding scene, but nevertheless they keep on going and love what they do: shredding the mountain and just having a good time with friends. We have exclusively interviewed our five female Blue Tomato team riders. Find out what they think about girls riding!
Sponsors: Blue Tomato, Billabong, Swatch, Oakley, Neff, 32, Etnies, Dakine, Les Ettes
How did you spend your last season?
I had planned to be filming all winter, but I hurt my ankle on the first shooting day of the season and I got stuck in Europe with no snow. That’s when I got a wildcard for the Freeride World Tour in Chamonix and won. After that event I ended up competing on the whole tour. I wanted to film in between the contests but I got hurt again. So at the end it’s been a full on competing winter. Quite different for me as I hadn’t competed for a very long time, but hey, a World Champ’s Title looks always good on a CV!
What do you think about the progression of girls snowboarding in the last few years?
The level has improved big time! When I started most of the girls you had seen in the ads just look nice and turn a 360. Nowadays girls are ripping with all 720, 900 and double corks…hell yeah ! But I wish it was growing faster and better! Especially in Europe with still very unequal prize money on the freeride competitions and still no girls in all the main city events, like Air and Style and Freestyle CH etc..
Have you ever had a part in a snowboard video?
Yes, I had some in the Psykopit movies at the time and in the Burton videos too. My favorite part was the one in Roshambo. It was the opening part of the movie and really the only year I’ve had a real film crew all winter with me and no injuries. Before and after that I had a couple of shots at trips with Thermos, Anomaly TGR, The Community Project, the Uniquely movie etc..
Do you think girl movies can inspire other girls to put together a crew to show off their riding and start filming?
Of course and that’s what we need! That’s also how all the main “guys film crews” started filming their friends. I think that’s the best way to find motivation, push each other and find sponsors. Projects like Lipstick Production are essential and they will motivate the younger girls to go out and shred!
What are the reasons that girls snowboarding hasn’t received as much attention as guys snowboarding?
Women’s snowboarding is about 10 years behind men riding. Of course, it’s just not as interesting if a girl lands a 7 while a guy pulls off a double cork or something similar. But I think that womens riding is getting a lot more attention these days, especially from the girls side.
Why do girls need women’s-specific snowboard gear?
Our anatomy is different. That means, girls need lighter and softer boards because we aren´t as strong as guys.
What’s your favorite girls brand and why?
Definitely Elan. Out of all the boards I have tested, the boards by Elan are the best. They’re really light, which makes them easier to control.

Lipstick Productions is a European female snowboard movie production. It´s set up by riders for riders. A plattform for girls to go riding, shooting and filming together all over Europe. Beeing creative, funny and not taking everything too serious…it´s all about looking damn good!
Lipstick Productions was created pretty spontaneously and already late in the season, but the girls needed to implement this idea, as there is no European Girls Snowboard Movie Production among hundreds of male ones. After everything was kind of set, they started their first film trip to Helsinki in February. They unfortunately missed the first and only big snowfalls in Europe. Anyways they managed to get enough footage in only four months. In fall you can watch their first movie!
The film will be – as simply as it sounds – all about girls having fun on their boards. The Lipstick Girls are trying to not tumble in the powder, collecting backcountry & street experiences, travelling to extraordinary destinations, get to know other cultures, riding slushy parks in spring to progress & go surfing in summer! The hardest thing is looking still damn good while doing all this, as some people will hopefully watch this European All Girls Flick!
As you maybe noticed spring came a little bit to early in middle Europe. That is why we decided to go where all the snow (and cold) is…. Helsinki! Last week I was there with Lipstick crew filming for our super awesome movie and this is how our days looked like:
Waking up really early in the morning (10am) and drive around Helsinki trying to find a good spot to ride. Of course we had a GPS but even that didn’t always help us. When we found the spot it was time to go out of the car and that was the hardest thing to do for me. It was -25 and I was always wondering what the hell am I doing outside if I could be in a warm comfortable bed. Luckily most of the spots were already prepared since Helsinki is such a popular place for street riding. A few small corrections and we were ready to ride! You do your trick and all the freezing kind of seems worth it…
