Obwohl der Sport hierzulande noch recht jung ist, gibt es Österreicher, die mit der internationalen Konkurrenz mithalten können. Die meisten von ihnen, wie etwa Michael Schweiger, leben aber dort, wo das Stand Up Paddeln erfunden wurde – auf Hawaii. Dort wurde es früher vor allem als Fortbewegungsmittel für Surf-Fotografen und -Lehrer verwendet, die damit schneller weiter draußen liegende Riffe erreichen konnten. Mittlerweile ist SUP aber, vor allem in den USA, zum Massensport aufgestiegen. Fitness-Center bieten spezielle Stand Up Paddel-Kurse an, in denen Kniebeugen, Liegestütze und ähnlich qualvolle Übungen auf dem Brett durchgeführt werden. “Aber schon dadurch, dass man aufrecht steht und die Bewegungen des Wassers ausgleicht, wird der ganze Körper trainiert”, sagt Mario Lach und klingt dabei wie ein Fitness-Guru.

Although this sport isn’t known well in Austria, there are still some of us who can compete with the world’s best stand up paddlers! Most of them, like Michael Schweiger, live where stand up paddling (SUP) was invented: Hawaii. At first, they just used it as means of transport for surf photographers and –teachers to be able to reach riffs located far our. By now SUP has become, especially in the US, a sports that nearly everybody does! Fitness centers provide special stand up paddling courses, in which you make squats, push-ups and some other painful exercises on the board. “Simply the standing upright and compensating the moving of the water makes your body fit and trains every part!” says Mario Lach and sounds like a fitness guru.

Hey Surf Freaks!! Do you know all about surfing? Sure? We’ll exemplify some basics in surf theory: today some stuff about wave types. So watch out!!

Wave types

Waves begin way out in the ocean, strong winds blowing on the surface of the water creating ocean swells. These swells then travel great distances until they hit the shallow coastline becoming strong powerful breaking waves.  A breaking wave generally takes a surging, spilling or plunging form.

Waves types:

Surging waves:  this type of wave comes in out of rather deep water onto steep beaches. If this wave breaks it will surge up the beach.

Spilling waves: are the most common waves. They are produced by a gently sloping sea floor, which causes the wave to peak gradually. These waves have a relatively slow release of energy –so that the crest spills down the wave face

Plunging waves: the best types of waves for surfing! These waves occur where the swell moves out of deep water into very shallow water (such as on a reef) – The plunging waves can brake in tubes!
